After teaching middle school for a few years I found myself saying this multiple times a day! There is very little lecture or direct instruction in my class, but when I do need to give students information, I need to see that they’re paying attention! We’ve found that this simple directive works when we are doing partner conversations, group conversations, community circles, etc. It is powerful, respectful and just plain pleasant to look at someone when they are speaking to you, and it helps so much with classroom management!
